North Indian vs. South Indian Formats
Depending on regional traditions, Vedic Astrology charts are drawn in two primary visual styles. While they look completely different, they contain the exact same astronomical data.
North Indian Style (Diamond)
- Fixed Houses: The top diamond is *always* the 1st house (Ascendant).
- Moving Signs: The zodiac signs move around the houses depending on the time of birth, indicated by numbers (1 = Aries, 2 = Taurus, etc.).
- Focus: Heavily focuses on the houses (Bhavas) and their geometric relationships.
South Indian Style (Square)
- Fixed Signs: The boxes always represent the same zodiac signs (top-left is always Pisces, top-right is always Gemini).
- Moving Houses: The Ascendant (Lagna) is marked with "Asc" or diagonal lines, and houses are counted clockwise from it.
- Focus: Heavily focuses on zodiac signs and planetary transits through them.

The Lagna (Ascendant) chart shows the physical reality, body, and material circumstances you are born into. The Moon chart (Chandra Kundli) shows your mental state, emotional perceptions, and how you register events. In Vedic Astrology, both must be synthesized to get an accurate reading.
What is the Bhav Chalit chart used for?
The Bhav Chalit chart determines the true house placement of planets. In equal-house systems, some planets might appear to sit in one house, but because of ascendant degrees, they actually function and deliver results in the adjacent house. Bhav Chalit corrects this boundary shift.
How do Divisional Charts (Vargas) differ from primary charts?
Primary charts (Lagna, Moon, Sun) show the overall promise of your life. Divisional Charts are mathematical subdivisions that dissect specific sectors, showing whether the promise of the primary chart actually bears fruit in areas like marriage (D9), career (D10), or health (D30).
