The Anatomy of a Lunar Mansion
In Western astrology, the sun's position dictates your core sign. However, Vedic astrology recognizes the Moon as the most important celestial body for determining human psychology. Because the Moon orbits the Earth in roughly 27.3 days, ancient seers divided the sky into 27 equal sectors called Nakshatras (Lunar Mansions).
Each Nakshatra spans exactly 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the Zodiac. While a Zodiac Sign (like Aries or Taurus) represents the broad environmental backdrop of a planet, the Nakshatra represents the specific, highly detailed flavor of that energy. The Nakshatra is ruled by a specific deity (Devata), a ruling planet, and has its own distinct mythological story.
The Four Padas (Quarters)
Just as the Zodiac is divided into Nakshatras, each Nakshatra is further subdivided into four quarters called Padas.
- ❁ Micro-Zodiacs: Each Pada spans exactly 3°20'. Since 27 Nakshatras × 4 Padas = 108 Padas, the entire sky is mapped to the sacred number 108.
- ❁ Navamsha Connection: The Padas perfectly map to the D9 Navamsha chart. Depending on which Pada a planet sits in, its underlying dignity and soul-level purpose can change entirely.
- ❁ The Purusharthas: The 1st Pada relates to Dharma (purpose), the 2nd to Artha (wealth), the 3rd to Kama (desire), and the 4th to Moksha (liberation).
Ganas and Yonis: The Core Temperament
To quickly assess a person's instinctual nature, Nakshatras are categorized by their Gana (Temperament) and Yoni (Animal Archetype):
The 3 Ganas
- Deva (Divine): Gentle, charitable, and rule-abiding (e.g., Pushya, Revati).
- Manushya (Human): Practical, success-driven, fluctuating between good and bad (e.g., Bharani, Rohini).
- Rakshasa (Demon): Fierce, independent, boundary-breaking, and intense (e.g., Ashlesha, Mula).
The Yoni (Animal Totem)
Every Nakshatra is assigned a specific animal (e.g., Horse, Elephant, Serpent, Dog). This Yoni dictates subconscious sexual behavior, primal instincts, and romantic compatibility. For instance, pairing a Cat Yoni with a Rat Yoni is considered highly antagonistic in Vedic compatibility.
Nakshatras in Marriage Compatibility (Kundli Milan)
In Vedic tradition, marriage compatibility is not calculated using Sun signs. Instead, astrologers use the Ashtakoota system, an 8-point test based entirely on the bride and groom's Janma Nakshatras (Birth Stars).
The Nakshatras determine the mental wavelength (Varna), biological compatibility (Yoni), and inherent temperament (Gana) of the couple. If two people have deeply incompatible Nakshatras, the relationship may struggle with emotional friction, regardless of how harmonious their other planets are.
