Understanding Dasha Sandhi
In the Vimshottari Dasha system of Vedic astrology, life is divided into major planetary periods called Mahadashas. Each Mahadasha is ruled by a specific planet and lasts for a predetermined number of years:
- Sun: 6 years
- Moon: 10 years
- Mars: 7 years
- Rahu: 18 years
- Jupiter: 16 years
- Saturn: 19 years
- Mercury: 17 years
- Ketu: 7 years
- Venus: 20 years
Dasha Sandhi (literally "Dasha junction") is the overlapping transition zone between the ending of one Mahadasha and the beginning of the next. Think of it as the twilight between day and night - neither fully one nor the other.
Duration and Timing
The exact duration of Dasha Sandhi is debated among Vedic astrologers, with different schools of thought:
Traditional View
Last 6 months of outgoing Dasha + First 6 months of incoming Dasha = 12 months total
Conservative View
Last 3 months of outgoing Dasha + First 3 months of incoming Dasha = 6 months total
Some astrologers also consider the Antardasha Sandhi (sub-period junctions) within each Mahadasha, though these are generally less intense than Mahadasha transitions.
Common Effects During Dasha Sandhi
Dasha Sandhi is often characterized by:
- Uncertainty and Confusion: As old patterns dissolve and new ones haven't fully formed, decision-making can feel unclear
- Life Changes: Major transitions in career, relationships, residence, or health often occur
- Emotional Turbulence: Mood swings, anxiety, or feeling "in between" states
- Karmic Completion: Unfinished business from the outgoing Dasha may surface for resolution
- New Beginnings: Seeds planted during this time often manifest strongly in the new Dasha
