What is Grah Gochar? The Cosmic Weather
In Vedic astrology, Gochar (transit) refers to the ongoing journey of the nine celestial bodies across the sky relative to the positions they held at the moment of your birth. Astrologers compare natal promise to a seed, and transit planetary positions to the rain and sun. A seed can only sprout (natal potential) when the weather is favorable (planetary transit).
By monitoring Grah Gochar, you can identify auspicious windows (Muhurats) for launching businesses, starting relationships, buying property, or taking a step back to fast and reflect during challenging cycles.
Planetary Speeds and transit Cycles
Each planet travels at a different speed, determining the duration and depth of its influence on your life:
1. Shani (Saturn) Transit — 2.5 Years
The slowest physical planet, Saturn brings structure, discipline, and tests of karma. It rules Sade Sati (the 7.5-year transit over the Moon's neighboring houses) and Dhayya (2.5-year transits in the 4th or 8th house from the Moon).
2. Rahu & Ketu Transit — 1.5 Years
The lunar nodes move in a retrograde (backward) direction. Rahu transits show where you will experience intense focus, desire, or illusion, while Ketu transits show where you must let go and seek spiritual detachment.
3. Guru (Jupiter) Transit — 1 Year
The great benefic planet. Wherever Jupiter transits, it expands, blesses, and protects. A Jupiter transit over your Moon sign, 5th house, or 9th house brings luck, marriage, or progeny opportunities.
4. Inner Planets (Mars, Sun, Mercury, Venus) — 30 to 45 Days
These fast-moving planets govern daily vitality, mood, finances, and relationships. Retrograde phases of Mercury or Mars can temporarily disrupt communication and planning.
How to Read Gochar Relative to Your Birth Chart
To accurately interpret transit effects, astrologers look at several layers of planetary integration:
- The Moon Reference (Chandra Lagna): Treat your Moon Sign as the 1st house. If Saturn is transiting the sign directly after your Moon, it is in your 2nd house of wealth and family.
- Dasha Integration: Transits are secondary to planetary cycles. If you are in a Jupiter Mahadasha, the transit position of Jupiter carries supreme importance for your experiences.
- Ashtakavarga Strength: Each house in your chart carries a score from 0 to 8 points (Bindus). If a benefic planet transits a house with a high Ashtakavarga score (5 or above), the transit yields outstanding results.
- Natal Conjunctions: If a transiting planet passes over the exact degree of a planet in your birth chart, it triggers the latent themes of that natal planet.
Transit Neutralization: The Vedha Rules
Vedic transit rules contain a check-and-balance system called Vedha. A planet transiting a favorable house yields positive results only if its Vedha house remains vacant:
- Jupiter in the 11th house (highly auspicious) has its effects blocked if a planet occupies the 8th house (its Vedha position).
- Saturn in the 3rd house (favorable transit) is blocked if another planet transits the 12th house.
- Sun in the 6th house (favorable) is blocked by a planet in the 12th house.
